Outdoor Fun With Your Dog

Getting out and about with your beloved dog results in fantastic benefits for you both! The increased activity, reduced stress and happier and healthier mindset that results from exercise applies not only to you, but also to your four-legged buddy!

This year we have had some fantastic weather – although exercising dogs at peak times of the day when temperatures are too hot is not recommended. Thankfully, we can still get out and about during the cooler times of the day and enjoy some one-on-one time with our dog.

Here are some summer-fun activities you can enjoy with your dog …

Play Fetch!

Dogs love to chase and playing fetch is great exercise for your dog! Try to get out early before the temperature soars (if it’s going to be hot) and especially on cooler days.

If your dog doesn’t suffer with joint problems, playing fetch with a Flingball launcher and tennis ball will increase the distance your dog has to chase the ball. Please note, we don’t recommend the Flingball launcher if your dog is older or has sensitive joints as it can heighten joint issues.

Hide & seek

Hiding a ball for your dog to find in long grass, or dropping it when your dog isn’t looking, is a fantastic way to get them using their nose. It has less impact on their joints than fetch, so can be a gentler game to play. You can get involved in the game by helping to direct your dog towards the ball.

Water sports

Letting your dog have a paddle in water, or playing fetch with a toy that floats, will encourage your dog to exercise and keep cool at the same time.

If your dog hasn’t had much experience in water, make sure they are confident before letting them swim out too far. If they are unsure of the water, never force them in.

Try new walks

Exploring new places can be highly stimulating and fun for your dog. New smells, new places and meeting new doggie friends all add to the fun – not to mention new places for leaving doggie pee mail! Exploring new walks is also a great way to develop your dog’s confidence and understanding of the world. This is particularly true for puppies and young dogs.
